Atlanta Gas Light is proud to collaborate with Dawson County Parks and Recreation to enhance local wildlife habitats through the donation of eight bat houses and two tubular bat roosts. This effort reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship, caring for the communities we serve and protecting what we all share.

Bats play a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems. As natural pest controllers, they consume large quantities of insects - helping to reduce the need for pesticides and supporting local agriculture. Despite their importance, bat populations have declined in recent years due to habitat loss and disease, making conservation efforts like this increasingly important.

The bat houses and tubular roosts from Atlanta Gas Light being installed at the park are designed to provide shelter for the local bat population. While traditional bat houses offer structured spaces for colonies to roost, tubular roosts provide an alternative habitat that can support different bat behaviors and environmental conditions. Together, these structures help create a more resilient habitat for bats to thrive.

This initiative builds on broader conservation efforts led by Atlanta Gas Light’s parent company, Southern Company Gas, which has supported bat habitat creation and research across multiple states. In 2025 alone, employees and volunteers constructed dozens of bat habitats, helping provide shelter for thousands of bats in protected areas.
