Southern Company Gas and Plantlanta Grow Atlanta’s Urban Canopy

At Southern Company Gas, we believe that working with nonprofits to protect the environment we all share is how good fuels great. That’s why Georgia-based employees joined over 600 volunteers, dozens of community partners and music legend Chuck Leavell for Trees Atlanta’s "Plantlanta 2025," a day dedicated to helping restore and grow the city's urban forest. Overall, Plantlanta successfully planted more than 600 trees over 12 Atlanta City Council districts in one weekend, underscoring volunteers’ commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Planting Our Future
The day began in the Westview neighborhood where Southern Company Gas volunteers joined neighbors, Trees Atlanta and Chuck Leavell, renowned for both his Grammy-winning music career and his lifelong dedication to forest conservation. Together, we planted nearly 60 new trees to help provide shade and cleaner air for generations to come.

As cameras from the nationally aired public television show “America’s Forests with Chuck Leavell” rolled, our employees worked side by side with Leavell to demonstrate how corporate and community partnerships can create greener, healthier neighborhoods. Each tree planted was carefully mulched, watered and celebrated as a living investment in Atlanta’s future.

A Celebration of Community
"Events like Plantlanta showcase the power of collaboration. Trees don’t just beautify our neighborhoods, they promote cleaner air, help provide sound buffers and can reduce urban blight. They help restore habitats, aid in preventing erosion and can positively impact mental health. By working with organizations dedicated to conservation and preservation, we’re helping to protect the environment for generations to come," said Joanne Mello, vice president of corporate sustainability for Southern Company Gas. "That’s why Southern Company Gas and its subsidiaries have been proud partners with Trees Atlanta for nearly 25 years, contributing more than $160,000 in corporate gifts and numerous volunteer hours."

Plantlanta 2025 was a milestone moment, but it’s also part of a much larger journey. Every tree planted is a promise to our city, our customers and our communities that we will continue to invest in a greener tomorrow. It’s how good fuels great.
