At Southern Company Gas and our subsidiaries, customers are at the center of all we do. We are dedicated to delivering clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to homes and businesses, enriching the communities we serve and investing in low-carbon solutions.
Our goal is to reach net-zero direct greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 2050. But this is just one piece of the puzzle as our world moves toward a new energy future. By collaborating across the energy industry to reduce emissions from the entire natural gas supply chain, we can help fuel a sustainable future.
Our customers depend on the energy we provide, and they can rely on our infrastructure to fuel their lives. We conduct regular inspections, proactively repair leaks and deploy modern technology and materials across our system, increasing the efficiency of our energy and mitigating risks of service interruption. Prioritizing infrastructure upgrades has reduced methane leaks and decreased maintenance costs, improving consistency in service. As of the end of 2022, our distribution pipeline is 100% free of known cast and wrought iron steel - materials which are susceptible to corrosion and dangerous leaks.
When it comes to lowering greenhouse gas emissions, we’re deploying a wide range of solutions for our customers. By increasing the availability of renewable natural gas (RNG) and providing customer programs offering carbon offset options at some of our subsidiaries, we’re working alongside our customers to improve energy sustainability. RNG performs like traditional natural gas but is not a fossil fuel. It comes from waste methane captured from landfills, farms, food waste and wastewater, and reduces emissions from these sources. RNG can be carbon neutral or even carbon negative.

Energy is foundational to safety, productivity, comfort and quality of life. We employ a broad range of solutions to help us deliver affordable and accessible fuel to families and businesses across our service area. Through our subsidiaries we offer a variety of programs to assist our customers and help them identify ways to reduce energy consumption, including financial assistance programs and free toolkits for weatherization and conservation, energy efficient appliance rebates and renewable fuel solutions. Our investments in new technologies like gas heat pumps will offer efficiencies of up to 150%, further supporting energy savings while lowering emissions.
We help connect customers to financial aid programs from federal, state, local, and company-sponsored sources. Notably, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and our partnership with the Salvation Army offer crucial support, including grants for seniors and veterans. We also provide discounts and programs to defray heating appliance costs, aiming to ensure income-eligible customers can easily access support for their energy bills. In 2023, we connected 160,000 customers to more than $50 million in bill payment assistance.
